Bucket List and Movies...

I updated my Spring movie list by crossing out the ones I've now seen, but it isn't quite time for a full post. Maybe after I watch a few more of them.

My Bucket List is almost 2 years old now...

I have only crossed off a few things since writing that - MOSTLY because the majority of them are Travel related, and a good portion of them are also general "Get Better At..." goals that will basically never be 'checked off' until that bucket is good and kicked, and then if I'm better than I was when I started, that's good enough for me!

Direction for the Future of the Blog

Yeah I'm really trying to figure that out still... And I'd love to hear some input if you have any.

I'm not going to get rid of this blog, but there are SO many different sites I'm using around the internet, and that's not including my Fitness Blog also on Blogger!

Examples:
Twitter
Books
Running
Body Measurement
My Art
Pinterest
Inspirational Pictures
Goals
More Goals
Even MORE Goals (Schemer is still in Beta so you can't see that unless you already have it!)

Those sites are just the ones I use off the top of my head!!

So what should I do here? I've already got a lot of subjects covered.

One that isn't covered is Japanese Music Videos... I could do just that!

Maybe I'll focus exclusively on Pirates!

Gone Primal

As my beautiful wife documented in her blog we have decided that with this new year we would start The Primal Blueprint 21-Day Total Body Transformation as outlined in the book of the same name... (If you buy the book through that link I supposedly get money... but nobody ever has so I don't expect to!)

If you've never checked out Mark's Daily Apple - you really should! (I don't get anything if you click on that link)

It is a valuable resource for anybody interested in health regardless what you believe on the whole Caveman/Primal idea. Some of the articles get a bit wordy but I don't think they are anywhere near as bad as Mercola for wordiness!

For an intro to what 'Primal' is, check it out here.

I've mentioned before how my biggest issues in my quest for physical perfection (ha ha) were the 3 S's:
Sleep, Sugar and Soda
This lifestyle change removes the 2 consumables (no sugar which pretty much cuts out the soda for me cuz I don't do diet!) and has some strong suggestions for improving sleep (Turn off electronics earlier and go to BED). That is really hard. I think the sleep is actually harder than avoiding sugar, as my night time ritual of staring at the computer screen is currently my wind down time and my "Me-time" with no kids running around peeking over my shoulder, etc.

So far (day 3 of the 21 day challenge, then after that you modify it to fit your personal needs) I feel great! I'm probably sleeping better already (although the first night I stayed up too late...) and it hasn't been THAT hard to avoid the candy and Mt. Dew (although MAN it is tempting at the grocery store checkout lines!) We got some decent sparkling water at Costco and I picked up some surprisingly delectable High Cocoa content Dark Chocolates so I think that helps!

After work today my fitness challenge is to do 2 rounds of as many pushups, squats, pullups and plank (for time) as I can. I'm pretty good at all of those so we'll see how I do after work!

Finally, I've started a Tumblr photo blog for ease of cool inspirational picture sharing (Fitness, Yoga, Personal progress in Fitness and Yoga, Pirates, Steampunk. You know, the usual!)

How Bad Do You Want It?

Maybe this should be posted on my sadly neglected Fitness Blog but I think it is applicable in so many ways in life.

I think I forget a lot that I need to WORK for it. I need to want it more than I want to BREATHE!

Here's a good video/speech (football related but still relevant!):

Notes from Work

Yay I finished something else.

Yes it was doodling at work - but hey that's how LOTS of my 'art' has started.

So here it is:

Inspiration from Will Smith

Excellent montage of inspirational words from Will Smith:

You can do it!

And so can I.

(via Alwyn Cosgrove)

Finally finished something!

Skull by ~warlordblade on deviantART

The Skull A Day blog is awesome. A few years ago they posted a really cool Stencil skull for spray painting - I decided to draw it. I only changed a few things on the stencil - it's just too cool! Makes me want to spray paint stuff!

Over on my Zero Day Project I have "Create at least one drawing/piece of art a month" as a goal... so here's the first for June!

Now to keep it up or speed up - because I actually started this quite some time ago!

Any ideas? Requests?

My Biggest Problem

Procrastination.

Something I've laughed about or made light of all my life while it really has affected me (and not only me!) seriously. School papers, work projects, discussions that need to happen with colleagues or friends - everything is affected. The important things we should be doing are overshadowed by other things. A big contributor is lack of confidence - something I know I've been lacking the past few years.
javascript:void(0)
I've talked about 'Structured Procrastination' before, but that's a somewhat silly (yet serious) way of justifying procrastination - and definitely a useful tool for controlling it to do something better in a way...

The New Yorker has a new article that is very interesting, talking about the hows, the whys, etc:

Philosophers are interested in procrastination for another reason. It’s a powerful example of what the Greeks called akrasia—doing something against one’s own better judgment. Piers Steel defines procrastination as willingly deferring something even though you expect the delay to make you worse off. In other words, if you’re simply saying “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die,” you’re not really procrastinating. Knowingly delaying because you think that’s the most efficient use of your time doesn’t count, either. The essence of procrastination lies in not doing what you think you should be doing, a mental contortion that surely accounts for the great psychic toll the habit takes on people. This is the perplexing thing about procrastination: although it seems to involve avoiding unpleasant tasks, indulging in it generally doesn’t make people happy. In one study, sixty-five per cent of students surveyed before they started working on a term paper said they would like to avoid procrastinating: they knew both that they wouldn’t do the work on time and that the delay would make them unhappy.
Read James Surowiecki's full article here.

I also like the snippet Kottke quotes:

A similar phenomenon is at work in an experiment run by a group including the economist George Loewenstein, in which people were asked to pick one movie to watch that night and one to watch at a later date. Not surprisingly, for the movie they wanted to watch immediately, people tended to pick lowbrow comedies and blockbusters, but when asked what movie they wanted to watch later they were more likely to pick serious, important films. The problem, of course, is that when the time comes to watch the serious movie, another frothy one will often seem more appealing. This is why Netflix queues are filled with movies that never get watched: our responsible selves put “Hotel Rwanda” and “The Seventh Seal” in our queue, but when the time comes we end up in front of a rerun of “The Hangover.”

Partially just because the Netflix movie we actually received a few days ago and have procrastinated watching a bit is "Hotel Rwanda".

(via Kottke)

“Procrastination most often arises from a sense that there is too much to do, and hence no single aspect of the to-do worth doing. . . . Underneath this rather antic form of action-as-inaction is the much more unsettling question whether anything is worth doing at all.”

The Bucket List

Since I've talked about how I both do and don't like goals, I decided I needed to put down some of the things I want to do and some of the places I'd like to visit in my life, along with some of the big things I've accomplished.

I've finally decided I need to create my own Bucket List

I'm also including some lifetime desires that I always wanted and have already achieved! Finally there are a few items that are very very vague or general type things to remember or do. Stuff that is kind of hard to actually complete, but it's important to me.

So here is the very long list that will continue to grow and develop I'm sure:

Post Sickness Workout

Like I mentioned yesterday, the Ragnar Relay Wasatch Back race is one week from tomorrow, and being sick was majorly cutting into my training.

So even though I didn't think I was feeling 100% physically (although mentally keeping that positivity!) I made myself run (in my VFF Sprints today - still not quite used to 'em yet):

Ran up through my old neighborhood and talked to the parents of one of my childhood friends. With a rainstorm approaching it was really a VERY nice run. I was also trying out a knee strap to see if it helps my knee. It did help, but didn't completely remove the problem. So today I'm going to try a more traditional knee brace sleeve.

I felt REALLY good, a bit tired at times, but I was able to keep a *MUCH* better pace than even before I was sick. I think a big reason is that finally I've been able to REST more than I have been, closer to the amount of rest I should be getting.

As I was cooling down so I didn't need a shower after my shower, I decided I should do some pull ups, so I did 15 wide handed pull ups, 15 close handed chin ups, 10 parallel pull ups, and 10 more close handed pull ups for a total of 50! I was pretty happy with that!

So I guess the moral of the story is - make sure you get enough rest. It'll improve your overall energy, your MOOD will majorly improve, your stress will go down, and life will be GREAT.

Now if I can just take that advice myself for the next week! Maybe I'll have to implement a bedtime for the next few days!

Positive

I've been quite sick lately WAY too often. In preparing for a relay race next Friday (!) this isn't very useful.

However - as a result of how crappy I have been feeling, and only feeling a little better today, I have decided that it is really time to increase my positivity in my life. I have SO many great blessings in my life, I need to remember that. Wife, Family, Friends, LIFE!

I am working on a 'bucket list' - 123 things I want to do before I die. I honestly won't beat myself up too much if some of them don't happen, but at least it'll give me something to work towards. I'm not even a quarter of the way through, so this will take a while!

We are working on getting our house ready to be put up for sale. Our hope is to get completely out of debt and from there - STAYING that way. We have enjoyed owning a home, and I do think it is generally a smarter option than renting. However, being tied down with no options makes it hard to stay positive. We are looking forward to some FREEDOM!

This is the start.

PULL UPS!!!

I love pull ups.

In some ways I'm good at them, but that's just BASIC pull ups. No bells, whistles, oohs or ahhs.

I may have mentioned this blog before - but there is an interesting blog pretty much dedicated to pullups. Bar-barians

They just posted these two videos that show some things/pull-up moves I definitely am striving for.

AWESOME.

Sorry I am posting so many videos lately and not having many other posts... It's been pretty busy lately!

Of these moves my first goal is definitely the 'Muscle Up' - It's HARD!

Bouldering at Home

I need to do this in my house.

Okay that would most likely be difficult to patch up when I move though...

I definitely want to boulder more though!

Awesome!

Some New Blogs I'm Really Enjoying

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed a few days back I mentioned there are WAY too many blogs out there that are just amazing.  I figured it was about time I shared some of them with you.

Health, Fitness & Well-Being Blogs/Sites:

  • Mark's Daily Apple - This blog is seriously impressing me. TONS of information about the 'Primal' Lifestyle which is definitely interesting - but overall there is just a lot of really good information about health and making healthy choices. The video from the previous entry was first seen by me on this entry about 'Health Suicide' which is a good list of things NOT to do.
  • Zen Habits - According to Wikipedia (Yay Wiki!) Zen Habits is one of the MOST visited blogs on the internet. Crazy. It's new to me! So hopefully you'll find some good stuff here as well. The newest entry on 'How Not to Hurry' is really good. We all need to slow down - plus I love the Lao Tzu quote there! (yeah it'll be on a QOTW sometime!) I also found a lot of these sites on this list from this entry. I almost don't need to finish this article because the worst (and best) thing about finding one good blog, is you usually find LOTS more once you find one. They link to each other!
  • Zen to Fitness - This blog (more Zen? I'm really liking the philosophies lately - Balance, Minimalism, Flow) is a great source of finding balance in a healthy lifestyle.
  • Fitness Blackbook - This site is a bit more contemporary - Hollywood, if you will - but still has a lot of really good stuff.
  • Fitness Spotlight - Currently Fitness spotlight is at the end of a 30 Day Challenge with GREAT tips throughout those entries. I recommend checking them out.
 Mixed Martial Arts Blogs:
  • Bloody Elbow - There are lots of MMA blogs out there - lots of good ones. Good commentary, analysis, etc etc. Bloody Elbow is just one of them - really the information doesn't differ a lot from site to site, so I'll just list a few of them here that you can check out if you want. If you like MMA I would suggest checking them out and finding the one whose 'voice' you like best.
  • Cage Potato
  • Five Ounces of Pain
  • MMA For Real
  • MMA Mania
 Random, Fun, or Funny Blogs:
  • Awkward Family Photos - Holy Cow! People are crazy, creepy, hilarious, scary, weird and just plain nuts! This site really makes me laugh.
  • Awkward Stock Photos - Not as funny as AFP above, but still awkwardly silly. Most of the time.
  • Passive Aggressive Notes - It's funny to see the many forms of passive aggressiveness. (Sometimes some language, cuz people ARE jerks sometimes!)
  • There, I Fixed It - You've probably had Family, Friends or Coworkers email you pictures from this site. It's awesome!
AAaaaaannd I think that's all for today. I hope you can find something you enjoy, and Happy Reading!

Insanity: Week FOUR!

Wow! I can't believe I've made it through almost four weeks of Insanity!

It's been awesome so far - I like the workouts a lot. They majorly kick my butt, but I'm not ridiculously sore the next day. I might actually prefer a little more soreness.

Today I do the awesome "Pure Cardio" followed by Insanity's "Cardio Abs" and I'm a bit nervous about it - because I finally started going back to the Ab Class here at work today! Again one of my major goals for the next while is to get RIDICULOUSLY RIPPED ABS and I figure every little bit helps. I'll make sure not to overdo it, but I don't think my abs will mind M-W-F ab classes here at work. Plus it is amazing how much better I feel afterward!

Insanity is going very well - I am looking forward to next week's "Core Cardio and Balance" workout scheduled EVERY DAY for the 'Recovery Week' followed by a Fit Test AND the beginning to the MAX Insanity Workouts.

Month two here I come!

Insanity: Week Two!

I started out blogging about every day of the Insanity workout... I got to day two. Obviously that hasn't worked extremely well.

I have been working hard to do Insanity and have only had one snafu. On Saturday we were so busy picking up and delivering furniture (take table to brother, pick up table and bed from in-laws) rushing home and birthday parties that I got a good workout just doing all that. Still I felt bad so I did Saturday's workout Sunday morning.

There are no new workouts in Week 2, except that on Saturday I get to do the Cardio Abs workout. Every workout in Insanity includes a LOT of Core work and Shaun T is always saying "Keep your core TIGHT!" which is already majorly improving my stomach area in the week and a half I've been doing insanity.

Since one of my main goals this year is a rock-hard six-pack, I'm glad that insanity is finally getting rid of that final little layer of lower abdominal pooch. I look forward to seeing what's in store for me in the Ab exercises. I also might just have to start going to my work's Ab class again since I stopped a couple of months ago because of work requirements. We'll see if it is too much right now or if I can handle it.

Have a GREAT day!

Teeter Totter Bread and Water!!

One of the fun things I got for Christmas was a Teeter Hang-Ups F7000S Inversion Table. You can read some reviews on Amazon, see some Pictures from Costco (where we bought it), watch a video review (mine is actually the higher-end one and we got it cheaper!) and/or read this:
Manufacturer Description: If you're plagued by back pain or suffer from stress overload, consider the Teeter Hang Ups F7000S inversion table, which helps to counter the effects of too much time spent sitting, standing or moving repetitively. In full inversion it's also a great way to add extra crunch to exercises like sit-ups without adding painful loads to your back. The Teeter Hang Ups F7000S rotates on a pivot system. With simple arm movements (rotation is accomplished by shifting the weight of the arms), the table easily rotates to any comfortable angle. The smooth rotation allows for oscillation and intermittent traction. Adjustable roller hinges allow you to pre-select three levels to control the aggressiveness of rotation. Increase the traction and enhance your stretching experience by pushing on the EZ Stretch Traction Handles (sold separately)
It's been interesting and I'm not sure how it is working for me yet - I've used it every day since Christmas - BUT I also haven't even watched the instructional DVD yet, so I might not be utilizing it to its full capacity. While the blood rushes to the head - it does feel good to stretch your back, and I plan on doing exercises while fully inverted as soon as I DO watch the instructional DVD. Maybe I'll post some pictures or video. We'll see!

The Aftermath...

Of Christmas!

Christmas was great this year, my family was in town, there was all sorts of craziness going on, oh yes there was definitely some INSANITY!!!

Insanity you say? Why yes, I did get the insanity workout program for Christmas and am very excited to have a fitness program to blog about again.

I plan on starting it on MONDAY JANUARY 4th - and hopefully I'll be able to get the before pictures taken and the fit test done before then.

The fit test basically measures how many reps you can do of the various exercises, and you repeat this a time or two throughout the 60-day program to see how you have improved. I'm very excited because one of my limitations with P90X was that I didn't have enough weights so I didn't achieve the results I felt I could have. Insanity requires no equipment, and from people I've talked to - it's great!

More details and posts on fun Christmas gifts to come.

Linkity Link Links!

No not THAT LINK!

The kind that leads you to random, thoughtful or otherwise interesting stuff on the world-wide-webisode we live in.

There's only two as long as you aren't counting the one above...

The first is a great little spot for those of you who end up helping people with technical issues every year when people get their new gadgets.

Computing For Dummies from Wired's Gadget Lab

"This isn’t a troubleshooting request, but it drives me crazy: watching people double-click links in web browsers. Why? WHY?"
I always die a little inside when I see people unnecessarily double-clicking...

Second is an interesting article about attempting things and failing from a 23 year old filmographer who makes me feel very old (even though 23 is the age I automatically think I am, even though I'm 30 now!)

Thoughts on Tour by Charlie Hoehn via Kottke

"I’ve failed more times than I can remember. I’ve tried starting up several businesses, tried patenting inventions, tried starting up online communities, tried building several websites, tried to win contests… and failed almost every single time. But I never chalked any of them up as failures in my head, because I learned so much in the process each time. So now, when I’ve finally reached a point where things seem to fall into place with far less effort, I can’t help but think about all those times where I didn’t succeed over the course of the last eight years. And I look back in fondness, because those lessons learned are the reason I’m here. None of this stuff happened over night — in a way, I’ve been working to reach this point since I was 15."
See? I feel old. I gots lots to do still!

Finally - I gotta include the YES! Cartwheel from MMAist Diego Sanchez:

Crazy. And he (at 27) also makes me feel a little bit older than I think I should be.

And I think I lied - there are definitely more than 2 links in this entry. Oh well.

Juggling

I 'learned' how to Juggle for a family activity years and years ago, and then learned a bit more from a coworker at a University computer job I had... but I am not a good juggler by any means and would definitely like to improve.

Interesting view on juggling:

8 Reasons Normal people should learn to juggle.

"Juggling is a really good exercise for life. It has a lot of the fun parts of a soul sport (working to better yourself, non-competitive activity, etc.) but isn’t dangerous — unless you’re juggling fire or pancakes or something. That’s why I want everyone to learn."

(via Kottke)
